God created women with the same extrinsic value as men. In the Old Testament, women were highly regarded and were involved in every aspect of the Israelite community life and worship except for the priesthood. Sadly, by New Testament times, the role of women in Jewish culture had radically diminished due to the degrading influence of the pagan cultures around them.
Jesus treated women with deep respect and compassion and he regarded them as his spiritual sisters. He defied the societal norms of the time by speaking to women in public; he had women disciples; he befriended women who were societal outcasts; he trusted women to make spiritual decisions about their own lives and be responsible for themselves.
